My Invisalign Aligner Doesn’t Fit! Now What?

Your Invisalign aligners are supposed to fit your teeth like a glove. So, when they don’t, it can be a little alarming. After all, how can they work if they’re loose or popping off in the back? If this happens to you, don’t panic. While it is true that they shouldn’t be doing this, here are a few things to try if you notice them fitting loosely.

Chew Sticks

You may have already picked up an accessory for your aligners called a bite stick or a “chewie.” These are designed to help with both your chewing exercises and to help you put your aligners on securely. If you are struggling to get a good fit, bite down on your chewy, moving it along your arches and biting each time. This should help pop it into place.

Time Minimums

With Invisalign, you need to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours each day. If you are taking them off for longer than that, this may cause your teeth to shift back into their old positions, meaning your newer aligners may not fit as well. Thus, to avoid having difficulty getting them to stay on and setting your treatment back, be sure to wear them for 22 hours a day, no exceptions.

Backtrack

Backtracking is when you wear your previous set of aligners instead of the newer set. This may help get your teeth back on schedule, and after a few days or weeks, your new set may fit properly once again. Be sure to check with your dentist before doing this, as this may not be the appropriate solution.

Remember, your Invisalign aligners are meant to fit snugly to your teeth; if you notice that they don’t stay where they’re supposed to or they do not fit properly, try a bite stick or speak to your dentist for further instructions.
